Jack Tatum, 61

Pro Bowl safety for the Oakland Raiders, Jack Tatum, has died of a heart attack Tuesday due to complications of diabetes.

Jack Tatum is best remembered for his hit that crushed Darryl Stingley to paralysis during an NFL preseason game in 1978, giving him the nickname, “The Assassin.”

However, Jack Tatum wasn’t at all proud of the hit but it did cause him some remorse and alienation among his peers.

Despite that, many of his colleagues consider Tatum as one of the best NFL players there is. In a statement, fellow Raiders John Hicks says, “Jack was a true Raider champion and a true Raider warrior. Jack was the standard bearer and an inspiration for the position of safety throughout college and professional football.”
