Inter Milan will look to salvage something from the remainder of their season when come up against Chievo on Saturday.

Leonardo’s side suffered a double setback in the space of four days when suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of rivals AC Milan, all but ending their title hopes, before crashing out of the Champions League on Tuesday thanks to a 5-2 defeat against Schalke.

The Italian side now hold the dubious honour of becoming the first side ever to concede five goals in a European game, and will now hope to get their season back on track and keep their feint Serie A hopes alive when they play hosts at the San Siro this weekend.

Five points adrift from their cross city rivals with only seven games remaining, three points is a must against a Chievo side hoping to rubber stamp their place in Serie A for next season.

Stefano Pioli’s side were 2-1 victors when the two sides met earlier in the season and they will be looking to build after losing only one of their last four games. Goals have been a problem for the Verona outfit of late, and they will have to address this issue if they are to overcome their illustrious opponents.

With Tottenham Hotspur breathing down their necks, only three points will do against a Sunderland side boosted by the return from injury of key players.

City’s defensive resources are wearing thin, with Kolo Toure still suspended for a failed drug’s test, while Pablo Zabaleta is still on compassionate leave after his father was involved in a car crash.

Danny Wellbeck, who made his first appearance in an England shirt during the international break, will likely lead the line for Sunderland, while Ghanaian Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan, who lined up against England at Wembley, will also be included in the starting line-up for the Black Cats.

It is the battle of the top two at the San Siro this weekend as AC and Inter Milan look to grab the victory that could put them in the driving seat for the Serie A title.

AC Milan currently occupy top spot and sit two points ahead of their arch rivals with eight games to go. Victory for them and they would be overwhelming favourites to get over the finish line.

Inter will see this weekend’s game as their time to pounce though. If they can come away with three points, they will be leading the way going into the final stretch of games.

To say this is a big occasion in the Serie A season would be somewhat of an understatement.

Looking at the form of both teams going into this one, AC Milan have struggled for goals in their last three games – scoring just once throughout their draws with Tottenham and Bari and their most recent defeat to Palermo.

Inter are on somewhat of a better run, having gone six games in all competitions without a defeat. They are also the sole Italian representatives in the Champions League and will take on Schalke 04 in the last eight next month.

It is often said that form goes out of the window for a local derby though, so it really will depend on how each team performs on the way. They will both be desperate for the points, so it could be an absoloute cracker at the San Siro on Saturday evening.

The World Cup Semi Finalists will look to end a poor run of form which has seen them lose their last two games to Estonia and South American rivals Chile.
